JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women’s basketball team posted an 89-51 win over Lane College Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 8-2 on the season, while Lane dropped to 8-3 overall. 

Union’s Shanique Lucas scored the first basket of the game as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead. Lane cut the deficit to five points soon after, but Union took control and led 26-13 at the end of the quarter. Union scored 26 more points in the second quarter while holding Lane to just 10. Union led 52-23 at the break. Union shot 53 percent from the field in the first half. Leah Church led with nine points on three 3-pointers at the break for Union. 

After three minutes of play in the second half, Lane cut just three points off the lead of Union, 58-32. Union then posted a 12-0 run to take a 70-32 lead with 3:51 left in the quarter. Union closed the quarter leading 73-37, after outscoring Lane 21-14 in the quarter. Union edged Lane 16-14 in the fourth quarter to cruise to the win. Union’s largest lead was 43 points, 84-41, midway through the fourth quarter. 

Union forced 33 turnovers in the game, scoring 46 points off turnovers. Lane edged Union 28-26 in rebounds. 

Union was led by Church with a season-high 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Bethany Dillard added 12 points including four 3-pointers, while Leah Cauble added 12 points. Shanique Lucas and Samariah Thompson added 11 points each. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 37 percent (11-30) from 3-point range, and 90 percent (18-20) from the free throw line. 

Lane was led by Simmons with 14 points and Lee with 13 points. The Lady Dragons shot 47 percent from the field, 40 percent (4-10) from long range, and 50 percent (3-of-6) from the foul line. 

Union will step back into Gulf South Conference play Saturday and will play GSC games for the remainder of the regular season. Union will play at West Alabama Saturday, December 31 and at Alabama Huntsville January 2, both games at 2 p.m.
