David, a Union softball senior, completes JPD internship program in preparation for a career in criminal justice

Mackenzie David, a senior criminal justice major at Union University, recently completed the fall internship program with the Jackson Police Department. She knew law enforcement was a place she wanted to serve at a very early age. David recalls always looking up to her first cousin, a federal marshal.

“He told stories about all the great opportunities the job had brought him,” David said.

The Scott, Louisiana native enjoyed the internship and said the best part was meeting all the different people. David said, “I got to see how everyone has a different background, but all have an important role in being a police officer.”

She was able to shadow many different people and the jobs they perform, getting to see the differences between each job and the ones that sparked her interest.

David recalls the best things she learned from this experience are “how each person will have your back and how to observe the little things because they are important.”

David is preparing for her senior season with the Lady Bulldog softball team. In her three years with the team, she has earned several awards including GSC and TSWA Player of the Week honors. She has eight home runs and 31 RBI in her career. David also tied the school record for home runs in a game with two.

When asked what softball has taught her that will translate to law enforcement, David said, “Softball teaches me that not every day is the same and that adversity is always there. It is something that I have to learn to overcome. Not every day is going to be a good day on the field, but as long as I keep moving forward it will pay off. I think this relates to law enforcement because not every day will be a good day and there will be adversity with people or investigations. Not every day is the same and I am excited to be challenged in my job just like softball challenges me now. Stay consistent and work hard and you will see results.”

Union interim head coach Sydney Sturner was the assistant coach last season, her first season at Union. Sturner said of David, “I have gotten the opportunity to watch Mackenzi grow over the past year and a half. She is a passionate, strong, respectful young woman and a selfless teammate. Her years here at Union have allowed her to step into a place of leadership through the example she displays on and off the field. She is a constant encourager to her teammates and one you can count on to be in your corner and have your back. I am excited for her to have gotten this experience at JPD and looking forward to seeing the path God has for her!”

After graduating from Union, David mentioned a couple of options that are still be considered. She is thinking of enlisting in the military and/or getting job experience with the JPD. Ultimately, David wants to become a federal agent.
